How to connect jumper cables
Written by Rocky Huber

It is a wise investment to have a good set of jumper cables in your car. If another vehicle is available, it can turn a situation where you are stranded into a minor inconvenience. For your safety, you should know the correct way to use the jumper cables.

Instructions:
1.Always shield your eyes and face from the battery. The battery has acid inside, and the fluids and vapors are very caustic, and can cause severe burns.
2. If there are vented caps on the battery, it is best to cover them with a damp cloth. The cloth will contain the vapors, and the dampness will resist burning from any sparks generated.
3. Make sure the two vehicles are shut off, and do not touch each other. Also beware any fan blades. The radiator fans on newer cars don't always shut off when the motor is shut off.
4. When you get a set of cables, you decide which color is going to be positive, and which is going to be negative. Most jumper cables have one set that are black. I always consider the black cables as negative. The other cable can be red, blue, yellow, or probably any other color the manufacturer wants to use.
5. Connect the positive end of the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. The positive terminal should be connected to the solenoid or the starter.
6. Connect the other end of the positive jumper cable to the charged battery.
7.Connect the end of the negative cable to the negative terminal of the charged battery.
8. Make the final connection to the stalled vehicle on a grounded area, like the engine block. You don't want to create sparks when you are connecting the terminal ends. Stand back as you make this final connection.
9. You may now start your vehicle. If the current draw is too strong, you may need to start, and rev the engine, in the running vehicle.
10. Once the car is started, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that you just connected them.

Tips & Warnings
Always consult your owners manual. The positive battery terminal is usually red. There is often a + sign on the battery to indicate the positive terminal. If in doubt call a professional.
