Pilates is for every body
 Written by Teresa Floyd

Pilates has gotten a bad rap over the years. Once reserved for dancers, it has mostly been viewed as an exclusive brand of fitness available only to the select. Its reputation defied its roots (thankfully) and we now find it a leading model of fitness for the mainstream.

Joseph Pilates invented the exercises. All of them. He saw Pilates as a simple yet precise way to provide overall conditioning for the body. He was right. Pilates knows no bounds, no restrictions- not age, height, weight or muscle tone- it is universal and exact. Joe got so good at it, he could look at a person and know exactly which combination of his 500 and some odd exercises they needed for maximum performance. Wow.

I’d like to think Joe guides me in my own creative approach to knowing what a person needs in an individualized program. My training comes from Romana, she worked directly under Joe and, at an undisclosed age she doesn’t discuss, she is still a power house in the pilates world. Joe would be proud.

She taught us well and the 700 hours of grueling training I received under her tutelage in New York City has made all of the difference to the type of Pilates instructor I have become. I call it ‘classical yet unconventional’ and I have compassionately employed this method over the last 7 years with clients from all walks of life.

When you discover Pilates. You love it. Really. It’s that simple. It works for every body and I do mean, Every Body. I have clients that use it as an extension to Physical Therapy and we work through their injuries, making them even better than before. Some come to me as an enhancement to their strict regimen of bodybuilding or running; still others find that the core conditioning of pilates is a must for pre and post pregnancy as well as the in-between time! I have clients (yes, male ones too) that have found marked improvement on the golf course since discovering my world; and, of course, others just come to the studio to relieve the stress of the day, or week, or month.

The truth is Pilates works. It doesn’t take an expert to do pilates, but pilates will make you an expert on your own body. If you just give it a chance.

My goal is to break through barriers and make people feel comfortable, it’s against the ‘house rules’ not to. That is part of what makes Flo Pilates unique. And it is, in part, what will make you visit the first time and never want to leave.

So, we (Erin works here too, you’ll love her!) invite you to come visit my new studio any time you’d like. Ours is an open door policy. We just want you to experience it. I promise, your mind, body and spirit will love you for it!
